What Students Need to Do: Students notice what changed and what may have made it change. They ask a testable question, compare results, and use observations as evidence. They use the pattern they find to explain an event or suggest a fix.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a likely cause and its effect, then point to evidence that supports the link. In a simple test, they change one factor, record results, and make a reasonable conclusion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may reverse the cause and effect or assume that one event caused another just because it happened first. They may change several factors at once, making the results unclear. They may also give an opinion instead of using observations or measurements.
How to Assess It: Give this prompt: Two identical bean plants have the same soil and light, but only one receives water. After five days, the watered plant is taller. Name the cause, the effect, and the evidence.

Lesson moves

Drop two paper helicopters with different wing lengths, time each three times, and decide whether wing length changed fall time.
Ask students to write why a puddle might disappear faster in sunlight than in shade and what evidence would support their answer.
Give pairs cards about weather, plants, and motion, then have them match each cause with an effect and defend one match.
Inspect a muddy schoolyard slope after rain, trace where water moved soil, and propose one barrier that could reduce erosion.
