What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name what happened and what made it happen. They gather observations from a fair test, then use the evidence to explain the connection or analyze why a problem occurred.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label the cause and effect in an investigation and cite measured evidence. The student can predict what may happen when one factor changes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the cause and effect or assume that one event caused another simply because it happened first. They may change several factors at once, making the results unclear.
How to Assess It
- Give students melting times for identical ice cubes placed in sunlight and shade. Ask them to name the cause, effect, and evidence for their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Make paper helicopters, change only the wing length, time each fall, and explain how wing length affected falling time.
Ask students to explain why a playground puddle might disappear faster on one day than another, using possible causes and observable evidence.
Sort scenario cards into cause, effect, and evidence groups, then have partners defend one match.
Investigate a wilting classroom plant by checking soil moisture, light, and temperature, then propose the most likely cause.
