What Students Need to Do: Students name a likely cause and the effect it may produce. They change one factor, hold other conditions steady, collect repeated measurements, and compare results. They use the data and a scientific mechanism to explain what happened.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a phenomenon, students can propose a testable cause, identify the outcome to measure, and design a fair comparison. They interpret data without claiming more than the evidence supports and explain the link between cause and outcome.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat events that happen together, or one after another, as proof that one caused the other. They may change several variables at once, skip repeated trials, or confuse the measured effect with the factor being changed. They may describe a pattern without explaining how the cause could produce the effect.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: One fertilized bean plant grew taller than one untreated plant. Name one needed control and one additional measurement, then explain what result would support the claim.

Lesson moves

Change the height of a book ramp, roll the same toy car three times, and graph how ramp height affects travel distance.
Write a claim answering, "Did ramp height cause the distance change?" and support it with measurements and a mechanism.
Play Cause, Effect, or Evidence using cards from short science scenarios, then justify each placement to a partner.
Use photos and weekly height data from two garden plots to test whether differences in sunlight affected plant growth.
