K.1 is a knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of spoken information and respond with more than one word. They remember short directions, speak clearly, follow conversation rules, and use appropriate greetings and requests.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student listens to a short message, responds with a clear phrase or sentence, and asks a related question when confused. The student completes directions in order, speaks loudly enough to hear, waits for a turn, and uses greetings or polite requests.
Common Misconceptions
- Some children think listening only means staying quiet, so they cannot tell what the speaker said. They may complete only the last step of a direction, answer with one word, interrupt, or ask an unrelated question.
How to Assess It
- Say, "Pick up the red crayon, then draw a circle." Have each child repeat the direction, complete it, and explain what they did using several words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored blocks; one child gives a two-step building direction, and the partner repeats it before building.
Pass a talking stick and ask what helps you learn; each child answers, then asks a classmate one related question.
Play Simon Says with two related actions, then ask children to retell each direction in order.
Set up a pretend school office where children greet the secretary, introduce themselves, and clearly ask for something they need.
