What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a speaker without interrupting and notice key details. They ask a relevant question when something is unclear and answer questions with a phrase or complete sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After a short read-aloud or set of directions, the student gives an accurate answer using several words. The student asks an on-topic question to get missing information.
Common Misconceptions
- Children may answer with one word when more detail is needed. They may ask an unrelated question or state a comment instead of asking a question. Some interrupt before hearing the full message.
How to Assess It
- Say, “Luis packed an apple and crackers for lunch. He ate the apple first.” Ask what Luis ate first, then have each child answer with several words and ask one question about the lunch.

Ways to Teach It
Put classroom objects in a bag, give three oral clues, and have children name the object and ask one follow-up question.
After a picture-book page, ask, “What are you wondering?” and have partners answer each other with complete thoughts.
Play Question Toss by passing a ball, asking an on-topic question, and requiring the catcher to answer with at least three words.
Role-play ordering lunch, with children listening to two choices, asking for clarification, and answering the server with several words.
