Common Misconceptions: Students may look quiet but miss key details. They may ask unrelated questions, repeat what the speaker said, or answer with one word instead of a clear phrase.
How to Assess It: Read aloud, "Lena put her red hat in her backpack before recess." Ask where Lena put the hat, then have each student ask one question about the sentence.

Lesson moves

Pair students with blocks. One builds from a hidden model while the other follows directions and asks questions when details are missing.
After a short read-aloud, ask, "What did you hear, and what question would help you understand more?"
Play Question Sort. Students place question cards under "helps clarify" or "off topic," then explain each choice.
Role-play asking a librarian for a book. The librarian gives partial information, and the student asks for the missing detail.
