What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen until a speaker finishes and track the main information. They ask an on-topic question when something is unclear and answer questions with clear phrases or sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student faces the speaker, waits for a turn, and responds to the information shared. The student asks an on-topic question when confused and gives answers with enough words to be clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask unrelated questions or repeat what they heard instead of naming what is unclear. They may answer with one word or begin speaking before the speaker finishes.
How to Assess It
- Read a three-sentence description of a lost dog. Ask each student to pose one clarifying question and answer one detail question in a complete phrase or sentence.

Read a short class announcement, then ask students to write one question that would help them understand it better.
Play Question Match, where students pair detail cards with relevant question cards and answer each question using several words.
Role-play ordering lunch, asking the server a clarifying question, and answering a follow-up question with a complete phrase. Love for you and all the kids
