What Students Need to Do: Students listen while someone else speaks and wait for their own turn. They follow class discussion rules and share ideas connected to the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student waits for a clear turn, listens without interrupting, and speaks so the group can hear. The student shares a related idea and responds to classmates.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think taking a turn means speaking whenever they have an idea. They may interrupt, talk over others, or stay silent because they do not know when to join.
How to Assess It: Ask groups of three, “What is the best playground game, and why?” Check whether each student waits, listens, and shares one related idea.

Lesson moves

Pass a talking stick around a circle as each student names a favorite animal and gives one reason.
Ask, “What makes someone a good discussion partner?” Record student ideas, then choose three rules for a class chart.
Play Turn-Taking Bingo, marking squares for actions such as waiting, listening, asking a question, and responding to a classmate.
Role-play ordering lunch at a counter, with students taking turns as the customer, cashier, and person waiting in line.
