What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare for and take part in a structured group meeting. They manage the group's purpose, schedule, speaking time, written record, and final decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students help organize and run a focused group meeting. They keep speakers within agreed times, record decisions and next steps, and use voting to settle major choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat group discussion as casual talk with no shared purpose. They may confuse taking equal turns with managing time, or record every comment instead of decisions and action steps.
How to Assess It
- Give groups eight minutes to decide which class text deserves a schoolwide reading day. Collect their agenda, time log, notes, and final vote tally.

Ways to Teach It
Give each team an agenda template, timer, note sheet, and issue card, then have students run a ten-minute decision meeting.
Ask students to write which meeting rule prevents one voice from controlling the group, then discuss their reasoning with a partner.
Play Meeting Manager, where groups earn points for meeting each agenda goal, recording decisions, and finishing before the timer ends.
Have teams plan a class fundraiser meeting, including deadlines, assigned tasks, speaker limits, written notes, and a vote on the final plan.
