What Mastery Looks Like: Students follow the group’s agreed rules without repeated reminders. They take turns, listen, complete their roles, and disagree respectfully while helping the group finish the task.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think collaboration means taking turns talking without listening or responding. Some interrupt, ignore assigned roles, or expect one student to complete the group’s work.
How to Assess It: Give groups a five-minute task to rank three recess games and agree on one choice. Use a checklist for turn-taking, listening, role use, and respectful disagreement.

Lesson moves

Give groups paper cups and role cards, then have them build a tower while following assigned speaker, builder, recorder, and timekeeper roles.
Ask students to write one rule that helps a group work well, then discuss which three rules the class should adopt.
Play a discussion relay where each student must paraphrase the previous speaker before adding a new idea.
Have groups plan a class celebration within a set budget, using roles and agreed rules to choose food, games, and decorations.
