What Students Need to Do: Students agree on a group goal and identify the jobs needed to reach it. They divide the work fairly, record assignments, and confirm that everyone understands their part.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students help set a clear group goal and break it into manageable tasks. They agree on fair roles, record who will do each job, and adjust the plan when needed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the leader should make every decision or do most of the work. They may assign jobs without checking workload, materials, or deadlines.
How to Assess It: Give groups four tasks for creating a class poster. Ask them to make a responsibility chart naming each task, its owner, needed materials, and a deadline.

Lesson moves

Give groups paper, tape, and straws; have them assign designer, builder, tester, and recorder before making a bridge.
Ask, “How can a group divide work fairly?” Students discuss, then write three rules for making and changing assignments.
Play Role Card Shuffle: teams draw task cards and negotiate who will complete each one, explaining their choices aloud.
Have teams plan a class book swap, listing jobs, owners, materials, and completion times on a shared chart.
