What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students agree on a group goal, break the work into clear tasks, and assign each task fairly. They record responsibilities and revise the plan after hearing group members’ ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a written plan with a clear goal, specific tasks, names, and deadlines. They listen to teammates, adjust assignments when needed, and explain how each person contributes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide work without first agreeing on the group goal. They may assign vague roles, give one person most of the work, or forget deadlines and follow-up steps.
How to Assess It
- Give groups this exit task: “Plan a class book display. List four jobs, assign each job, and explain how you made the workload fair.”

Ways to Teach It
Give teams index cards naming tasks for a paper tower project, then have them sort, assign, and record responsibilities before building.
Ask students to write: “What makes a group plan fair, and what should happen when someone cannot complete a task?”
Run a role-card challenge where teams have three minutes to assign researcher, recorder, materials manager, and speaker for a mystery task.
Have groups plan a classroom celebration, assigning jobs for invitations, supplies, setup, cleanup, and announcements within a set budget.
