What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell others facts and ideas in words listeners can hear and understand. They use complete thoughts, familiar grammar, and an appropriate speaking volume.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can state an idea in a complete sentence that classmates can hear and understand. The student uses familiar grammar patterns and repeats or adjusts volume when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Some children confuse an audible voice with shouting, or face away while talking. Others give one-word answers, leave out key words, or say phrases such as “Him got it.”
How to Assess It
- Show a picture and ask, “What is happening here?” Check that each child gives a complete sentence at an appropriate volume with understandable words.

Place a familiar object in a bag; each child pulls one out and tells the group its name and one fact.
Ask, “What is your favorite playground activity, and why?” Partners answer in one complete sentence, then repeat what they heard.
Play Voice Meter: students say one sentence at whisper, partner, and class volume, then identify the best level.
Set up a classroom help desk where students request a pencil, tissue, or directions using clear, complete sentences.
