MS-PS3-4
The standard
Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to plan a fair test about heating or cooling. They choose what to change, such as material type or mass, what to measure, usually temperature change, and what to keep the same. They should connect temperature change to average particle motion, not just say something “got hotter.”
Mastery looks like a clear investigation plan with variables, controls, tools, repeated trials, and a data table ready before starting. Students often mix up temperature and total thermal energy. They may also forget that a larger mass can need more energy to show the same temperature change.
Ways to teach it
- Have groups compare temperature changes in equal masses of sand, water, and metal washers after five minutes under the same lamp.
- Ask students to write: Why can two samples receive the same heating but show different temperature changes?
- Give a sample experiment plan with missing controls, and have students mark what must be fixed before testing.
- Connect to cooking by comparing why a full pot of soup heats more slowly than a half-full pot on the same burner.
