HS-LS1-1

ScienceGrades 9–12From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

The standard

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to explain the link from DNA to proteins to cell function. They should use evidence to show that DNA contains instructions, those instructions affect protein shape, and proteins do jobs that help cells work.

Mastery looks like a clear cause-and-effect explanation, not just a diagram of DNA. Students often get stuck treating DNA, genes, proteins, and traits as separate facts. They may also overfocus on memorizing transcription and translation steps instead of explaining how structure connects to function.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students build a DNA-to-protein chain with colored paper codons, amino acid cards, and a final folded pipe-cleaner protein model.
  • Prompt students to write: How could a change in DNA lead to a cell doing its job differently?
  • Give a four-box exit ticket: DNA instruction, protein structure, protein job, cell function, with arrows students must explain.
  • Use sickle cell anemia as a case study showing how one DNA change can affect protein shape and red blood cell function.
