What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare inherited trait variants within a population and use data to show which variant offers an advantage in a specific habitat. They use fractions, ratios, or probability language to connect that advantage with future trait frequencies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare survival or reproduction rates for two trait variants using fractions, ratios, or percentages. They explain that an inherited advantage can make a trait more common over generations without guaranteeing any individual's survival.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think individuals change their inherited traits because they need to survive. They may also assume a helpful trait guarantees survival, or that the strongest individual always reproduces most.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: On dark rock, 21 of 30 brown mice and 6 of 30 white mice survive to reproduce. Which fur color may become more common, and why?
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Scatter brown and white paper moths on light and dark backgrounds, run timed predator trials, then compare each color's survival fraction.
Ask students to write: Why might thick fur help in one habitat but hinder survival in another?
Play a card game where habitat cards change which beak trait earns food, then graph trait frequencies across five generations.
Use antibiotic resistance data to explain why resistant bacteria leave more descendants when an antibiotic is present.
