ScienceGrades 6–8Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity

The standard

Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals' probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to explain why some trait versions help organisms survive and have offspring in a particular environment. They should connect variation within a population to simple probability, such as more moths with dark color surviving on dark bark after pollution.

Mastery looks like using evidence, not opinion, to say which trait gives an advantage, why the environment matters, and how that affects the proportion of traits over generations. Students often think individuals change traits on purpose, or that every helpful trait guarantees survival.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give students colored paper “beetles” on different backgrounds, run predator trials, then graph which colors survive most often.
  • Discussion prompt: Ask, “Why might a trait be helpful in one environment but harmful in another?” using Arctic and desert fox examples.
  • Quick assessment: Show a data table of lizard leg lengths and survival rates, then have students write a two-sentence evidence-based explanation.
  • Real-world connection: Use antibiotic resistance as an example of how variation in bacteria can change survival chances when medicine is present.
