3-LS4-2
The standard
Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to notice differences within one species, then explain how a trait can help an individual survive or reproduce. They should use evidence, not guesses, to connect a variation to an advantage, such as camouflage, speed, thorn size, beak shape, or flower color.
Mastery looks like a clear cause and effect explanation: “This individual has this trait, the trait helps in this situation, so it is more likely to survive or have offspring.” Students often get stuck thinking all traits are helpful, or that animals change traits on purpose when they need them.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students paper moths in different colors and time them finding moths on varied backgrounds, then graph survival by color.
- Discussion prompt: Which cactus is more likely to be eaten, one with short thorns or long thorns, and what evidence supports your answer?
- Quick assessment: Show three beetles with different colors on bark and ask students to write which has an advantage and why.
- Real-world connection: Compare dog coat types and ask how thick fur might help or hurt survival in different climates.
