HS-LS4-2
The standard
Construct an explanation based on evidence that the process of evolution primarily results from four factors: (1) the potential for a species to increase in number, (2) the heritable genetic variation of individuals in a species due to mutation and sexual reproduction, (3) competition for limited resources, and (4) the proliferation of those organisms that are better able to survive and reproduce in the environment.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to explain natural selection as a chain of causes, not just say “the strongest survive.” They should connect overproduction, inherited variation, limited resources, and differential survival or reproduction. They also need to use evidence, such as trait data, graphs, or ratios, to show how a population changes over generations.
Mastery looks like a clear claim, specific evidence, and reasoning that links each factor to survival and reproduction. Students often mix up individuals and populations, treat acquired traits as inherited, or skip the resource competition part. Many also describe change but do not explain why one trait becomes more common.
Ways to teach it
- Run a bean beak lab with tweezers, spoons, and chopsticks competing for different food types, then graph trait success over rounds.
- Ask students to explain why a helpful trait spreads in a population, using the words variation, inherited, resources, and reproduce.
- Give a short data table of moth colors before and after pollution, and ask for one claim, two evidence points, and reasoning.
- Connect the lesson to antibiotic resistance by having students trace how resistant bacteria become common after antibiotic use.
