NGSS HS-LS4-4
The Standard
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze data across generations to connect environmental conditions with differences in survival and reproduction. They track changes in allele frequencies and explain why population traits become more common or less common.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the environmental pressure, inherited variation, and differences in reproductive success shown in a data set. They cite numerical evidence and explain population change without claiming that individuals changed their genes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think individual organisms change because they need to survive. They may also think selection creates useful mutations, or that dominant alleles are always favored.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A dark-fur allele rose from 20% to 68% after lava created dark ground. Explain the change using predation and reproduction.

Ways to Teach It
Scatter colored paper dots on light and dark backgrounds, run three rounds of student predation, then graph each color's frequency.
Give students a frequency graph and ask: Which environmental pressure best explains the pattern, and what evidence supports your claim?
Use a card sort matching environments, inherited traits, survival outcomes, and allele-frequency graphs, then have pairs explain each completed sequence.
Analyze insecticide-resistance data from mosquito populations before and after spraying, then connect survival differences to later allele frequencies.
