What this standard means
Students need to explain how environmental pressures can change which traits become more common in a population over generations. They should connect evidence, such as survival rates, reproduction rates, climate data, predator changes, or allele frequencies, to a clear claim about adaptation.
Mastery looks like using data to tell a cause-and-effect story, not just saying “they adapted.” Students often mix up individuals changing with populations changing. They also get stuck when they must link a specific pressure to a specific trait, then to reproductive success and gene frequency over time.
Ways to teach it
- Use a bean-beak lab with different tools and seed types, then graph which beak traits increase after several feeding rounds.
- Prompt students to explain how darker rock after pollution could affect moth color frequency over many generations.
- Give a three-row data table of allele frequencies over time and ask students to write one claim with two evidence points.
- Connect to antibiotic resistance by having students trace how incomplete antibiotic use can shift bacterial populations toward resistant strains.
