HS-LS1-6
The standard
Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to explain how atoms from sugars can be rearranged and combined with other elements, such as nitrogen, to build amino acids and other large carbon-based molecules. They are not memorizing reaction steps. They are using models, diagrams, or simulations as evidence to show matter is conserved and atoms are reused.
Mastery looks like a clear claim, evidence from a model, and reasoning that connects atom movement to biomolecule building. Students often think sugar is only burned for energy, or that organisms create matter from nothing. They also mix up energy flow with matter cycling.
Ways to teach it
- Use colored beads for carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, then have students rebuild a glucose model into a simple amino acid model.
- Ask students to write: How can a plant use sugar to build body parts instead of just using it for energy?
- Show two molecular diagrams and ask students to circle atoms that could be reused to build a larger carbon-based molecule.
- Connect to muscle growth by tracing how carbon from food can become part of new proteins after digestion and cell processes.
