HS-ESS1-2

ScienceGrades 9–12Earth's Place in the Universe

The standard

Construct an explanation of the Big Bang theory based on astronomical evidence of light spectra, motion of distant galaxies, and composition of matter in the universe.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to explain why scientists accept the Big Bang model using three evidence lines: redshift from distant galaxies, cosmic microwave background radiation, and the hydrogen to helium pattern in stars and gas. They should connect each observation to an expanding, cooling universe, not just list facts.

Mastery looks like a clear cause and evidence chain: spectra show galaxies moving away, leftover radiation fits an early hot universe, and matter composition matches predictions. Students often confuse redshift with color, think galaxies expand inside space like shrapnel, or treat the Big Bang as an explosion from one point.

Ways to teach it

  • Use slinkies or stretched elastic bands with marked dots to model galaxy separation as space expands, then connect it to redshift data.
  • Ask students to write a CER response explaining which evidence best supports an expanding universe and why.
  • Give three evidence cards, redshift graph, CMB map, and element pie chart, and have students match each to its claim.
  • Have students analyze a NASA galaxy spectrum image and explain how astronomers infer motion without visiting the galaxy.
