What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret galaxy spectra, background radiation, and element abundance data. They connect each observation to an expanding universe that began in a hot, dense state.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads a spectrum and identifies redshift as evidence that most distant galaxies are receding. They explain background radiation as leftover energy from an early hot universe and cite about 75% hydrogen and 25% helium by mass. They connect all three observations in one clear explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students often picture the Big Bang as an explosion from one point into empty space. They may think redshift means galaxies become red, or that every galaxy is moving away. They may also confuse the hydrogen-helium ratio by mass with the ratio by number.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A galaxy’s hydrogen line appears at 690 nm instead of 656 nm. Explain what this shows, then connect background radiation and hydrogen-helium abundance to the same model.
