MS-ESS1-4
The standard
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4.6-billion-year-old history.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to explain how layers of rock and fossils show the order of events in Earth’s long history. They should use evidence like deeper layers being older, fossil changes across layers, and major events such as extinctions, ice ages, volcanoes, or mountain building.
Mastery looks like a clear claim with rock or fossil evidence and reasoning about relative age. Students do not need to memorize period names. They often get stuck thinking every layer is perfectly flat, confusing relative age with exact age, or treating fossils as random objects instead of time clues.
Ways to teach it
- Have students stack colored paper layers with fossil cards, then cut and fault the stack to model how scientists read rock strata.
- Ask students to write: How can a fossil in one layer help date an event in another layer?
- Show a simple rock column diagram and ask students to identify the oldest layer, youngest layer, and one major event with evidence.
- Connect to highway road cuts or canyon walls by showing photos and asking what story the visible layers might tell.
