What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze rock layers and fossils to determine the relative ages of major events in Earth's history. They make a claim and support it with evidence and reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly order layers, fossils, and geologic events from older to younger. They use evidence from layer position and fossil changes to explain how the geologic time scale organizes Earth's long history.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the top rock layer is always oldest or that deeper fossils are more advanced. They may also assume fossils give exact dates or that geologic time divisions are equal in length.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-layer rock column with labeled fossils. Ask them to order three events and explain their order using two pieces of evidence from the diagram.

Ways to Teach It
Build layered clay columns with embedded shells, then cut and compare the columns to reconstruct the order of events.
Write a claim explaining which of two fossil-bearing layers is older, using layer position and fossil evidence.
Sort rock layer, fossil, eruption, and extinction cards into a timeline, then challenge a partner to find one misplaced card.
Examine a highway roadcut photo and annotate visible layers, faults, and erosion surfaces to infer the sequence of local events.
