What Students Need to Do

Students explain who decides what to produce, how to produce it, and who receives it in traditional, command, and market economies. They use evidence to compare Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey on a market-to-command continuum.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can classify economic decisions and explain their reasoning. They recognize that all three countries have mixed economies and support each continuum placement with examples of private ownership or government control.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat countries as purely market or purely command economies. They may confuse a country's government type with its economic system or assume oil production determines the whole economy.

How to Assess It

Give students three short country profiles. Ask them to place each on a market-to-command continuum and cite one detail that supports each placement.

   Give groups decision cards about prices, jobs, factories, and goods to sort under traditional, command, market, or mixed economy labels.

   Ask students to write which economic decision should be made by businesses and which should be made by government, with reasons.

   Play a continuum relay where teams place Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey using evidence cards, then revise placements when new evidence appears.

   Compare who sets prices and controls production for gasoline, food, or phones in Southwest Asia and in the United States.
