What Students Need to Do: Students identify who makes economic decisions, private consumers and businesses or the government. They use that evidence to place countries along a market-to-command continuum and explain why the position may vary.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare government ownership, private property, business choice, prices, and regulation in different countries. The student can defend each placement with specific evidence rather than simply naming an economic system.
Common Misconceptions: Students may sort every country as either market or command. They may assume mixed means an exact 50-50 split. They may treat any tax, regulation, or public service as proof of a command economy.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: A country allows private businesses but controls oil production and electricity prices. Mark its likely place on a continuum and cite two details that support your choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs policy cards about ownership, prices, and production, then have them place each card on a taped floor continuum.
Ask students to write which policy, government-set prices or private business ownership, gives stronger evidence for a country's placement and why.

Compare how Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Turkey handle one sector, such as energy or health care, using short country fact sheets.
