What Students Need to Do: Students identify who makes economic decisions: consumers and businesses, the government, or both. They place short country profiles along a market-to-command scale and cite details that support each placement.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain why a country may protect private business while also owning services or setting rules. The student places an economy on the scale, uses two facts as evidence, and recognizes that the position can change.
Common Misconceptions: Students often think mixed means an exact 50-50 split. They may treat any regulation as command economics, or assume private stores make an economy purely market-based.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: Most stores set their own prices, but the government owns the electric company and sets minimum wages. Mark its place on a five-point scale and cite two supporting details.

Lesson moves

Lay a rope across the floor, label each end, then have students place economy cards and defend each position.
Write three sentences answering: Can an economy be mostly market-based while the government controls electricity, and why?
In teams, draw policy cards, move a country marker toward market or command, and explain the move for one point.
Read a one-page profile of Kenya's businesses and public services, then highlight who makes each economic decision.
