What Students Need to Do: Students identify market and command features in a country's economy. They place economic examples along a continuum and justify each placement with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students sort policies such as private ownership, price controls, and government-run services by the amount of government control involved. They explain why countries do not fit either endpoint exactly.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat market, mixed, and command economies as three fixed boxes. They may confuse political freedom with economic freedom or assume government services make an economy purely command.
How to Assess It: Give students two country profiles with different levels of private ownership and government control. Ask them to place both on a market-to-command line and cite two supporting details.

Lesson moves

Give pairs policy cards, such as private stores, state-owned railways, and price controls, to place on a taped market-to-command line.
Ask students to write: Why might a country allow private businesses while the government runs health care or transportation?
