What Students Need to Do: Students explain how market choices and government decisions both shape a country's economy. They place economies along a continuum rather than labeling them as purely market or purely command.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use evidence about ownership, prices, production, and government rules to place an economy on the continuum. They explain why the placement is mixed and support it with examples.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat market, command, and mixed economies as three separate boxes. They may also assume government regulation makes an economy purely command, or private businesses make it purely market.
How to Assess It: Give students a country where businesses are privately owned but the government sets wages and funds health care. Ask them to mark its place on a continuum and justify it.

Lesson moves

Give groups policy cards to place on a floor continuum labeled pure command at one end and pure market at the other.
Ask students to write which matters more when classifying an economy, ownership or government control, and defend their answer.
Play Economy Sort, where teams classify short country scenarios and earn a point only when their evidence supports the placement.
Compare a local grocery store's private decisions with government rules on wages, food safety, and taxes to identify features of a mixed economy.
