What Students Need to Do: Students identify market and command features in a country’s economy. They place countries, including Australia, along a continuum and support each placement with evidence about private choice and government control.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain why Australia is mixed, using examples such as private businesses, consumer choice, taxes, and government services. The student can compare positions without labeling any real country as purely market or purely command.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think mixed means exactly halfway or assume every mixed economy works the same way. They may call Australia purely market based or mistake any government rule for total command control.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank continuum and ask: “Place Australia on the line, then justify your choice with one market feature and one command feature.”
