What Students Need to Do: Students identify who owns resources and who makes choices about prices, production, and jobs. They place economies along a line from command to market and support each placement with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly place a country on the continuum using facts about private ownership, government control, and regulation. They explain that mixed economies can lean toward either end.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat market and command economies as two fixed categories or assume mixed means exactly halfway. They may also confuse a country's political system with its economic system.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Businesses set most prices, but the government owns railways and regulates wages. Mark this economy on a command-to-market line and cite two clues.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs policy cards to sort along a taped floor line labeled pure command at one end and pure market at the other.
Ask students to write which matters more for placement, private ownership or government regulation, then defend their answer with an example.

Compare a local grocery store and public bus system to identify who owns each service, sets prices, and makes operating decisions.
