What Students Need to Do: Students examine who makes decisions about resources, production, prices, and consumer choices. They place countries along a continuum from greater private choice to greater government control and explain each placement.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a country profile, students can mark a reasonable position on the continuum and support it with two details. They can explain why most economies combine market and command features.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat market and command economies as two fixed boxes. They may assume a country is purely one type or that its position never changes. Some place countries by wealth rather than by who controls economic decisions.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Country A allows private shops and consumer choice, but the government owns banks and sets fuel prices. Mark its place on a five-point continuum and cite two details.

Lesson moves

Give pairs policy cards for China, India, Japan, and North Korea; students sort who decides, then place each country on a floor continuum.
Write whether a government should control rice prices during a shortage or let buyers and sellers decide, then defend your choice.
