What Students Need to Do

Students compare who decides what goods are made, how they are made, and who receives them in traditional, command, and market economies. They also compare Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa as mixed economies.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can classify an economic scenario and support the choice with evidence about who makes production decisions. They can place African countries on a market-to-command continuum and explain their placements.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat economies as purely market or purely command. They may assume market economies have no government role, or confuse traditional economies with economies that use old technology.

How to Assess It

Give students one fictional country where the government owns major industries but private shops operate. Ask them to classify it and justify its continuum placement.

   Give groups cards showing economic decisions, then have them sort each card under traditional, command, market, or mixed.

   Ask students to write which system gives consumers the most choice and support the answer with two specific features.

   Play an economy relay where teams match scenario cards to systems and explain each match before earning a point.

   Use current business examples from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa to identify private ownership, government control, and mixed features.
