What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how private businesses, consumers, and governments make economic decisions in each country. They compare ownership, pricing, regulation, and control of major resources using specific evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain that all three countries have mixed economies. They can describe differences, such as Nigeria’s government influence over oil and the large private sectors in South Africa and Kenya.

Common Misconceptions

Students may label each country as purely market or purely command. They may also confuse economic systems with wealth levels, government types, or the main products a country exports.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one economic feature shared by all three countries, then explain one difference involving private ownership or government control.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort country profile cards about business ownership, prices, oil, farming, and government services into three columns, then check each choice with a partner.

  2. Write a short response: How can three mixed economies differ in the amount of control held by governments and private businesses?

  3. Play a country clue game where teams identify South Africa, Nigeria, or Kenya from facts about ownership, regulation, resources, and markets.

  4. Compare how a clothing company might open a store in each country, including private investment, government rules, workers, and consumer demand.
