What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how Mexico, Cuba, and Brazil answer what to produce, how to produce, and who receives goods. They compare government control, private ownership, and consumer choice in each country.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly describe Cuba as mostly command based and Mexico and Brazil as mixed economies with stronger market features. They support comparisons with specific evidence about ownership, prices, jobs, or trade.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each country as a pure command or market economy. They may also confuse a country's political system with its economic system or assume all government involvement creates a command economy.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-column chart labeled Mexico, Cuba, and Brazil. Ask them to place each economy on a command-to-market continuum and justify each placement with one fact.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups ownership and price-setting cards to sort under Mexico, Cuba, or Brazil, then explain each choice.
Ask students to write which country gives consumers the most choice and support the answer with two economic features.
Play a clue-matching game where students connect facts about businesses, prices, and government control to the correct country.
Have students compare opening a small restaurant in Mexico, Cuba, and Brazil, focusing on ownership, permits, prices, and access to supplies.
