What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether custom, government planners, or buyers and sellers guide economic choices. They explain how each system decides goods, production methods, and access.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an economic scenario, students can classify the system correctly. They can cite details about decision makers, resources, labor, prices, and distribution to support their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think traditional economies have no trade or technology. They may assume market economies provide goods equally, or that one ruler personally controls every command economy decision.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete a chart showing who selects goods, production methods, and recipients in each of the three economic systems. Add one supporting example per system.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups nine decision cards to sort under tradition, government planning, or buyer and seller choice, then require one justification per card.
Ask students to write which system gives consumers the most influence, then defend their answer with two specific economic decisions.
Run a scenario relay where teams classify one card, name the decision maker, and pass it on, earning points for accurate evidence.
Give students profiles of cocoa farming, a state utility, and an open-air market, then have them mark who shapes each choice.
