What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who controls decisions about goods, production methods, and access in each economic system. They compare the roles of customs, government planners, consumers, and businesses in the same situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short scenario, students can classify the economic system and support their answer with specific evidence. They can explain how one product would be made and distributed differently under each system.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a market economy has no government involvement or that a command economy has no private choices. They may also think traditional economies are outdated or that countries use only one system.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket about a town producing bread. Students name who would make production and distribution decisions under traditional, command, and market systems.

Give groups role cards for elders, government planners, businesses, and consumers, then have them decide how to produce and distribute school lunches.
