What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who controls economic choices in traditional, command, and market systems. They compare how customs, government plans, and prices shape goods, production methods, and access.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that customs guide a traditional economy, officials direct a command economy, and buyers and sellers shape a market economy. Given a scenario, the student can classify it and justify the choice with evidence about decision-making.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a market economy has no government rules. They often confuse who receives goods with who makes them. They may also describe modern European countries as pure examples, rather than mixed economies.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For each system, write who decides which goods are made, how work is organized, and how goods are distributed.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups resource tokens and role cards for elders, planners, or buyers and sellers, then decide what to make, how, and for whom.
Ask students to write: Which system gives consumers the most influence, and what tradeoff might come with that choice?
Run a card sort with scenario cards, and require pairs to place each under traditional, command, or market with one written reason.
Compare a European family farm, a state-owned rail service, and a private grocery store to identify who shapes each economic choice.
