What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who makes production and distribution decisions in traditional, command, and market economies. They compare how customs, government planners, and buyers and sellers shape those decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an economic scenario, students can classify the system and cite details that support their choice. They can explain who decides what gets made, the production method, and who receives the goods.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every country uses only one pure system or that market economies have no government role. They may confuse traditional economies with poor economies and command economies with any economy that has laws.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “A national agency tells factories to produce 50,000 refrigerators and sets their prices.” Ask them to identify the system and explain all three decisions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups product, decision-maker, production-method, and consumer cards to sort into traditional, command, or market economy columns.
Ask students to write which system would respond fastest to a sudden bread shortage and support their claim with two reasons.
Play Economy Detective by reading scenario cards while teams identify the system and name the evidence that gave it away.
Have students trace how a local grocery store decides which foods to stock, where to buy them, and what prices to charge.
