What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect climate, landforms, water, and natural resources to where people live, travel, and work. They use maps and other evidence to explain those connections.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify a physical feature and describe a reasonable effect on settlement, transportation, farming, or jobs. They support the explanation with details from a map or scenario.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse physical features with human-made features such as roads and buildings. They may think geography determines every human choice or that climate means daily weather.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map showing a river, mountains, and plains. Ask them to choose a settlement site and write two reasons based on physical features.

Ways to Teach It
Build a model landscape with clay, water, and toy buildings, then place a community where people could find water, food, and transportation.
Ask students to write: How would living near a river change the way your family works, travels, or gets food?
Play a matching game using physical feature cards and human activity cards, such as fertile soil with farming or rivers with transportation.
Use a local map to identify nearby rivers, hills, or forests, then discuss how each feature affects homes, roads, or jobs.
