Students compare traditional, command, market, and mixed economies by asking who decides what to produce, how to produce it, and who receives it. They place the United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia on an economic continuum and support each placement with evidence.

Students can explain why modern countries combine private choice with government control. They can compare two European countries using specific evidence about business ownership, prices, production, and public services.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat command and market economies as pure systems that exist unchanged. They may confuse a country’s political system with its economic system or think “for whom” means who performs the work.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Place the United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia on a market-to-command continuum, then justify one placement with two economic details.

   Give groups decision cards about prices, factories, wages, and health care, then sort them under market choice or government control.
