Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students read maps to see how land and water influence where people move, settle, and fight. They explain these links with clear cause and effect statements.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify a geographic feature and explain the choice it shaped, such as troop position, travel route, or settlement. They use map evidence to connect the feature to an outcome.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name a river or mountain without explaining its effect on people. They may treat every river as a barrier, confuse roads and canals with natural features, or assume geography alone caused an outcome.
How to Assess It: Give students a map showing mountains, a river valley, and two westward routes. Ask them to choose a route and explain one benefit and one obstacle.

Lesson moves

Build a clay terrain map with mountains and rivers, then move pioneer counters west and record each barrier and gateway.
Discuss: How could a hill or river help one army and hurt another? Cite one detail from a battle map.
Sort feature cards and action cards, then match mountains, rivers, harbors, and plains with likely human decisions.
Use a local road and elevation map to explain why one road follows a valley, climbs a ridge, or crosses water.
