Elements in This Standard
S2L1 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.
- S2L1.a
Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken...
- S2L1.b
Plan and carry out an investigation of the life cycle of a plant by growing a plant from a seed and by recording changes over a period of time.
- S2L1.c
Construct an explanation of an animal's role in dispersing seeds or in the pollination of plants.
- S2L1.d
Develop models to illustrate the unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than humans.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use books, images, videos, or observations to identify and order the life stages of plants and animals. They compare cycles and explain how adults produce new organisms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can correctly sequence the stages of two different organisms. They can describe one similarity and one difference, using details from a source or observation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every animal hatches from an egg or goes through metamorphosis. They may show a life cycle as a straight line or leave out plant reproduction.
How to Assess It
- Give students shuffled frog and bean plant stage cards. Ask them to order each set, then write one similarity and one difference between the cycles.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs arrange picture cards for a butterfly, frog, chicken, and bean plant into separate life cycle loops.
Ask students to write: How is a frog's life cycle different from a chicken's life cycle?
Play a relay where teams place organism stage cards in order and explain each transition before earning a point.
Examine photos of a local garden plant across seasons, then identify evidence of growth, reproduction, and a new generation.
