What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what plants and animals need to live, including air, water, food or light, and suitable space. They use observations, pictures, or short texts to compare needs and explain their ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly sort needs shared by plants and animals and needs unique to each. They can explain how meeting or missing one need affects a living thing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants eat soil or do not need air. They may confuse wants with needs or assume every animal needs the same food and shelter.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a wilted plant in a dark cupboard. Ask students to name two unmet needs and explain how they would help it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up bean seedlings with different amounts of light or water, then record changes with drawings for several days.
Ask students to write or discuss, “Which needs do a sunflower and a rabbit share, and which needs are different?”
Play a card sort where students place picture cards under plant, animal, both, or not a need.
Choose a schoolyard plant or animal, then make a labeled care plan showing how its basic needs are met.
