What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use texts, diagrams, and observations to identify producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem. They trace energy from the Sun through food chains and food webs, then support explanations with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label organisms by role and explain how each gets energy. They read arrows in a food web and predict how one population change could affect other organisms.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think arrows show which animal is chasing another, rather than the direction energy moves. They may also think plants get energy from soil or that decomposers create energy instead of using dead matter.

How to Assess It

Give students a diagram showing Sun, grass, rabbit, hawk, and mushroom. Ask them to add arrows, label each role, and explain what may happen if rabbits decrease.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups organism cards and yarn to build a food web, then remove one organism and trace the effects.

  2. Ask students to write: How does energy from the Sun reach a hawk, and what evidence supports your explanation?

  3. Play Food Web Match, where students pair organism cards with producer, consumer, or decomposer labels and justify each choice.

  4. Study a schoolyard ecosystem and sketch how energy could move among one plant, two animals, and a decomposer.
