What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather information about how people use water, soil, forests, minerals, and energy resources. They judge whether sources and claims are reliable. They explain how resource use and conservation affect land, water, air, and living things.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can connect a resource to its uses, environmental effects, and practical conservation methods. They support comparisons with facts from reliable sources. They can clearly explain tradeoffs between human needs and environmental effects.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think renewable resources cannot run out or be damaged. They may treat conservation as completely stopping resource use. Some assume recycling removes every environmental effect of producing and using goods.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Choose groundwater, forests, soil, or fossil fuels. Name one use, one environmental effect, one conservation action, and one supporting fact from class sources.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort one day of classroom trash, identify the resources used to make each item, then propose two ways to reduce waste.

  2. Write a claim answering: Should our community limit water use during droughts, and what evidence supports your position?

  3. Play a card match with resource, use, environmental effect, and conservation action cards, then defend each completed set.

  4. Examine a home electricity bill, identify where energy is used, and create a three-step plan to lower consumption.
