What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify problems that reduce clean water, healthy soil, or clean air. They design a solution, then use evidence, criteria, and limits to judge how well it works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a proposed solution protects a resource and supports its continued use. They compare options using evidence such as cost, effectiveness, waste produced, and long-term impact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think natural resources cannot run out or that pollution disappears when moved elsewhere. They may choose a solution without considering cost, tradeoffs, maintenance, or unintended effects.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “A school has soil washing into a storm drain. Propose one solution and explain one benefit, one limit, and one measure of success.”
