Elements in This Standard
SKE2 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.
- SKE2.a
Ask questions to identify and describe earth materials—soil, rocks, water, and air.
- SKE2.b
Construct an argument supported by evidence for how rocks can be grouped by physical attributes (size, weight, texture, color).
- SKE2.c
Use tools to observe and record physical attributes of soil such as texture and color.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe rocks and soil, then use sealed bags or balloons to investigate water and air. They compare properties such as color, texture, size, shape, and movement, then share observations with words or pictures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name observable properties of each material and support each description with evidence. The student can sort samples by one property and explain the sorting rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think air is nothing because they cannot see it. They may assume all rocks and soils look and feel alike. They may name an object's use instead of describing its properties.
How to Assess It
- Show a rock, soil sample, sealed water bag, and inflated balloon. Ask each student to choose two, describe one property of each, and explain how they differ.

Ways to Teach It
Set out rocks, soil, sealed water bags, balloons, hand lenses, and property cards for students to observe, match, and sort.
Ask, “How could you describe each material to someone who cannot see it?” Record student words and test whether each description fits.
Play Property Match by having students pair picture cards of earth materials with words such as rough, smooth, wet, clear, or moving.
Take a schoolyard walk to find rocks, soil, water, and evidence of moving air, then sketch one observed property of each.
