What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe objects and name the materials they are made from, such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, or fabric. They describe visible or touchable attributes, including color, shape, size, texture, and hardness.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can examine an object, identify its material, and describe two physical attributes. The student can sort objects by a stated attribute and explain the sorting rule.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name an object, such as spoon, instead of its material, such as metal. They may confuse an attribute with a use, saying a cup is for drinking instead of describing its shape or texture.

How to Assess It

Give each student one classroom object and ask, “What material is it made from, and what are two attributes you can observe?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a tray of classroom objects to sort by material, then sort the same objects by texture, color, or shape.

  2. Show a wooden block and a plastic block, then ask students to describe how they are alike and different using observable evidence.

  3. Play Mystery Object by placing an item in a bag and having students identify it from clues about material, shape, and texture.

  4. Inspect playground objects and record whether each is made from metal, plastic, wood, rubber, or another material.
