What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine an object and make a prediction using its size, shape, material, or weight. They place it in water, record what happens, and compare the result with their prediction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a clear prediction before testing and sort each object by the observed result. They describe the object’s attributes and use evidence from the test to explain what happened.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all heavy or large objects sink and all light or small objects float. They may push objects under water instead of placing them gently. They may change their recorded prediction after seeing the result.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a crayon and a metal spoon. Ask them to predict each result, explain one reason, then test both in water and record what happens.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a water tub, cork, coin, block, spoon, and sponge to predict, test, and sort on a two-column mat.
Ask, “Which object surprised you, and what did you notice about it?” Students draw the object and dictate or write a response.
Play Prediction Point by showing one object at a time, having students choose sink or float cards, then testing for one point.
Show a life jacket and a rock, then ask students why people wear life jackets near water and test a small foam model.
