The Standard
Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the relationship between an object's physical attributes and its resulting motion (straight, circular, back and forth, fast and slow, and motionless) when a force is applied.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students push or pull objects with different shapes, sizes, or weights and watch how they move. They compare the motions and share what they notice using words or pictures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can carry out a simple, fair test and describe an object's path and speed. They can use observations to connect an object's features with how it moved.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think heavier objects always move faster or round objects always move in circles. They may also confuse the force they apply with the motion they observe.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a ball and a block. Ask, "What happens when you give each object the same gentle push, and why might they move differently?"
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Test a ball, toy car, block, and cylinder on the same ramp, then sort them by path and speed.
Show two objects and ask, "Which will move farther with the same push?" Students draw a prediction and explain their choice.
Play Motion Match by having students match object cards to straight, circular, back-and-forth, fast, slow, or motionless cards.
Compare how a rolling grocery cart and a loaded cart move when given similar pushes, using classroom bins as models.
