What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students design a fair test that compares equal and unequal pushes or pulls on the same object. They observe and record changes in speed, direction, or rest, then explain the results with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose what to change, what to measure, and what to keep the same. They use results to explain that balanced forces do not change motion, while unbalanced forces change speed or direction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think a moving object must have an unbalanced force acting on it. They may also think balanced means no forces are present, rather than equal forces producing no change in motion.
How to Assess It
- Give each pair a toy car, two strings, and two spring scales. Ask them to test equal and unequal pulls, record the motion, and write one evidence-based conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Attach two spring scales to a toy car, pull equally and unequally, then chart how the car moves in each trial.
Show a photo of tug-of-war and ask, “What force evidence would prove the pulls are balanced?”
Students sort scenario cards into balanced or unbalanced, then earn a point by explaining each choice with a motion change.
Analyze a soccer ball before, during, and after a kick, naming when forces are balanced and when its motion changes.
